Career Transitions & Lateral Moves

Overview

This section is the central hub for all programs that result in a change of an officer's Primary Military Occupational Specialty (PMOS). The Lateral Move (LM) program is a competitive process designed to balance the Marine Corps' inventory of officer MOSs by allowing qualified officers to transition into a new career field.

Each program has its own unique application process, eligibility requirements, and selection board. To begin, identify the career path you wish to pursue from the categories below and expand the accordion for details.

  • Important Consideration: Before beginning any lateral move application, you must discuss your intent with your current PMOS monitor. Selection for these programs will incur a new service obligation.

OFFICER LATERAL MOVE PROGRAM

The Officer Lateral Move (LM) program is a competitive process that allows qualified active component officers to transition from their current Primary Military Occupational Specialty (PMOS) to a new one. The program is managed by the Retention and Release Officer (RRO) and is designed to balance the Marine Corps' inventory of officer MOSs, ensuring that critical skill communities are properly manned to meet the needs of the service.

All lateral move requests are reviewed and selected based on the needs of the Marine Corps, the officer's qualifications, and the recommendation of the gaining occupational field.

FLEP/ULEP

special operations officer Program Overview

This program provides an opportunity for career-designated officers to lateral move and become a Marine Raider in the 0370 Special Operations Officer PMOS. This multi-phased and demanding selection process is designed to identify officers with the unique attributes required to succeed in the special operations environment.

The screening and selection process is managed by Marine Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC). MMOA's role is to provide a conditional release for screening and to execute the administrative lateral move for officers who are selected.

MMOA Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a conditional release from MMOA, officers must meet the following core criteria. All other specific eligibility requirements (physical, medical, security, etc.) will be vetted by the MARSOC recruiter.

  • Grade: Must be a First Lieutenant or Captain.

  • Career Designation: Must be a career-designated officer.

Application & Selection Process: A Multi-Phased Approach

The path to becoming a Marine Raider is a sequential process that begins with direct engagement with MARSOC.

Step 1: Contact a MARSOC Recruiter

  • This is the mandatory first step. The recruiter will conduct the detailed screening and validate all specific qualifications for the program.

  • Contact a MARSOC Recruiter Here

Step 2: Obtain a Conditional Release from MMOA

  • As part of the MARSOC screening process, you will be required to request a Conditional Release from your PMOS monitor (MMOA-1 or MMOA-2). This release is required to be scheduled for and attend an Assessment & Selection (A&S) course.

Step 3: Attend Assessment & Selection (A&S)

  • A&S is a mentally and physically demanding evaluation that assesses a candidate's suitability for service in MARSOC.

  • For information on what to expect, visit the official MARSOC A&S Information Page.

Step 4: Final Selection & MMOA Action

  • If you are selected at the conclusion of A&S, MARSOC will formally notify MMOA. MMOA will then take the final administrative action to process your lateral move into the 0370 PMOS and issue follow-on orders to the Individual Training Course (ITC).
