Who we are

As Career Analysts our mission is to assist enlisted active-duty Marines in enhancing their competitiveness for promotion and retention through professional career counseling, comprehensive record assessments, and education on current promotion board trends and best practices. If your command is interested, our team is available to conduct a command visit that can include a career brief for your Marines as well as individual career counseling sessions for Sergeants through Sergeant Major/Master Gunnery Sergeant (E-5 through E-9).

Individual Career Counseling

During one-on-one counseling sessions, we provide Marines with a comprehensive assessment of their records and individualized recommendations to help strengthen their competitiveness within their MOS community. Areas covered include:

  • Review of official military records, training history, and education accomplishments.
  • Analysis of Reporting Senior (RS) and Reviewing Officer (RO) profiles compared to Marines selected during previous promotion boards within the same MOS.
  • Evaluation of Fitness Reports, with emphasis on Sections I and K and compliance with MCO 1610.7B.
  • Audit of the Official Military Personnel File (OMPF) to identify missing documents, discrepancies, or administrative issues that may impact board consideration.
  • Assessment of current promotion and retention competitiveness, along with recommendations for improvement.

Command Career Briefs

We provide career briefs designed to educate Marines on the factors that influence promotion and career progression. Topics include:

  • Promotion eligibility requirements.
  • Competitive factors within MOS communities.
  • Official military records and OMPF management.
  • Building effective professional relationships with Reporting Seniors and Reviewing Officers.
  • Fitness Report trends and best practices.
  • Promotion board processes and board member perspectives.
  • Headquarters Marine Corps career counseling resources.
  • Guidance for Marines approaching service limitations and the process for requesting special promotion consideration through SARSS.

These are the same briefs we routinely provide at Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academies throughout the Marine Corps and are designed to give Marines the most current information available regarding promotion competitiveness and career development.

Leader Development and FitRep Guidance

While visiting your command, we can provide guidance to Senior Enlisted Leaders, Reporting Seniors, and Reviewing Officers regarding Fitness Report compliance, common administrative errors, and best practices for accurately documenting Marine performance in accordance with MCO 1610.7B.

*Please note that Headquarters Marine Corps does not provide travel funding for these visits. If your command would like us to provide in-person support, travel would need to be funded by the requesting command through DTS. We are happy to coordinate dates and tailor the visit to meet the specific needs of your unit.

If you are interested in scheduling a visit or would like additional information, please feel free to contact me at (703) 784-0542 or ecounselor@usmc.mil. We would welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can best support your Marines.

The Enlisted Career Counseling section has built a list of commonly asked questions (known as the selection board debrief questionnaire) and provides this questionnaire to all 21 members of the SNCO promotion board (via MMPR – the Promotions Branch) prior to the board beginning the selection process. This questionnaire is beneficial for us to be able to find out factual information regarding the Promotion process and competitiveness for Marines, in regards to what trends (positive & negative) the board members saw throughout all records reviewed, as well as other pertinent information that they want passed to Marines around the Corps. We then compile this information into a single document to release to the NCO, SNCO and Officer communities to show Marines what they need to focus on in making themselves as competitive as possible. This document is a compilation of the boards most common answers added in with the Career Counselors perspectives from daily interaction with the NCO/SNCO communities and regular interaction with board members throughout all board debriefs conducted, yearly (not just one specific board).
