reenlistment process

#1 Contact Your Career Counselor

This is your first step to completing the necessary documents to stay in. If you do not know who your Career Counselor is, click here to access an up-to-date directory of unit Career Counselors. Once you know who your Career Counselor is, set up an appointment with them to go over some options of staying in the Marine Corps.

#2 Complete a Package

All requests begin with a NAVMC 11537 (RELM). This document is the lifeblood of any request: Reenlistment, Extensions, Lateral Moves, SDA, Special Officer Program, etc. Your Career Counselor will guide you through the completion and any additional documents needed. This usually includes medical, dental, legal (S-1), security manager (S-2), S-3, and SACO. Comments from the chain of command up to the OIC and any other documentation the Marine may need such as SDA checklists, financial checklist, etc. will need to be filled out.

#3 Return to Career Counselor

Once a Marine has completed all the required paperwork, it is turned in to the Career Counselor for endorsement from the Commanding Officer. Everything is then submitted electronically to HQMC (MMEA) for processing. At any point, if a Marine feels the need to discuss their assignment options with the PMOS Monitor, they are encouraged to reach out via TEAMs, email, or phone to go over career and future options.

#4 Action Request Upon Decision from HQMC

Finally, all the hard work and waiting has paid off, and your request has been returned to the Career Counselor. This is the time to decide on if you are going to Stay Marine! If, for whatever reason, you are just not at that point of executing the request, there is an option to decline the approval. There are no negative repercussions from declining your request, and you can always resubmit another request up to HQMC. With that, if there are specific DSI’s or assignments offered in the approval, those same options and locations may not be available with future resubmissions. Marines are highly encouraged to discuss these topics with their Career Counselor and the PMOS Monitor.
