Sgt. Maj. Michael J. Exlos

Sergeant Major Exlos enlisted in the Marine Corps in September 1998 and completed recruit training at MCRD Parris Island. Following recruit training, he reported to the School of Infantry at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for Marine Combat Training. Once graduated, he reported to Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training Center for training as a 0231, Intelligence Specialist.

Private First Class Exlos reported to Headquarters and Service Company, 3d Battalion, 2d Marines in May of 1999 where he served as an Intelligence Analyst and assistant Intelligence Chief. While assigned to 3d Battalion, 2d Marines he deployed in support of the Unit Deployment Program to Okinawa, Japan and forest firefighting operations in Salmon, Idaho.

In October 2001, Sergeant Exlos transferred to the Headquarters Battalion, 2d Marine Division G-2, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as a Collections Analyst, Commanding Generals Intelligence Briefing team, and Platoon Sergeant.

In October 2002, Sergeant Exlos reported to Drill Instructor School, MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina. Upon completion, he was assigned to Company “F”, 2d Recruit Training Battalion where he served as a Drill Instructor, Academic Instructor, and Senior Drill Instructor.

In December 2005, Staff Sergeant Exlos was assigned to VMFA-251 where he served as Intelligence Chief. He deployed to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65) as part of Carrier Strike Group-1 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Once embarked, he assumed the additional role of Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Carrier Air Wing Intelligence Officer.

From June 2007 to June 2009 Gunnery Sergeant Exlos was assigned to Marine Corps Systems Command as a Project Officer for PM Intel. Additionally, he was the Company Gunnery Sergeant for Tenants Activity Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base Quantico.

In June 2009, Gunnery Sergeant Exlos reported 1st Marine Regiment where he served as the Intelligence Chief. He participated in combat operations in Helmand province in support of Operation Enduring Freedom while assigned to Regimental Combat Team-1.

First Sergeant Exlos reported 2d Battalion, 1st Marines in January 2012 where he served as the Company First Sergeant for Company “E”. He participated in a deployment as the mechanized Company with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit. In February 2013, First Sergeant Exlos transferred to Assault Amphibian School Battalion to serve as the Company First Sergeant for Training and Instructor Company and H&S Company. From May 2017 to June 2019 Sergeant Major Exlos was assigned to 4th Tank Battalion as the Inspector-Instructor Sergeant Major.

Sergeant Major Exlos transferred for duty as the Squadron Sergeant Major for VMFA (AW)-533 in July 2019. He deployed with the squadron to support the Unit Deployment Program to Iwakuni and Okinawa, Japan. Sergeant Major Exlos assumed his duties as Battalion Sergeant Major, HQSVC Bn, Marine Forces Pacific, in May 2021. During his tour, SgtMaj Exlos was assigned as the CSEL, Task Force Kuleana to assist INDO-PACOM and JBPHH leadership in response to the Red Hill water contamination crisis.

SgtMaj Exlos is currently assigned as the Sergeant Major, Manpower Management Division, Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Sergeant Major Exlos has an associates degree from Central Texas College. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with three gold stars, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with one gold star, the Navy Achievement Medal with two gold stars and various other Service and Campaign medals.
